Domestic Summer Language Programs

Domestic Summer Language Programs for Students

Summer is a great time to study foreign language. There are numerous programs in the US that are affordable and offer a diverse selection of languages well beyond the selection at UC Berkeley. For most students, the main goal is to reach a higher level of proficiency. Many programs offer levels well beyond the typical intermediate and advanced levels, allowing students the opportunity to further their language skills domestically. Not only do you get to study foreign language all summer long, you also get to travel to a new city and meet many new people with similar interests and academic goals.

IU Summer Language Workshop (aka SWSEEL)
Indiana University
Offering intensive summer language training at the Bloomington campus of Indiana University since 1950, the IU Summer Language Workshop provides over 200 participants annually the opportunity to complete a full year of college language instruction in eight- and nine-week summer sessions. For Summer 2016, the following languages will be offered: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Chinese, Estonian, Kurdish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Mongolian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Ukrainian. There are Project GO scholarships available for ROTC students enrolled at any accredited college or university in the US for 8-9 weeks of intensive summer language study (not all langauges are eligible; more information here).

Summer Language Institute (SLI)
University of Pittsburgh
The University of Pittsburgh's Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute has offered intensive summer language courses for over 25 years. With a focus on critical and less commonly taught languages, Pitt's SLI provides courses in Arabic, Bosnian /Croatian/ Serbian, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Russian, Slovak, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Whether students choose to study on Pitt's campus or on one of the SLI's many abroad programs, they can expect to cover approximately one academic year's worth of course work during a single summer. There are Project GO scholarships available for ROTC students enrolled at any accredited college or university in the US for 8 weeks of intensive summer language study (Turkish and Russian; more information here).

SLI offers Pittsburg-based, hybrid (i.e., Pittsburg + an abroad option), and abroad-only language programs.
