On September 10, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education informed grantee institutions of the Foreign Language and Area Studies Program (FLAS fellowships program) that it would not make continuation awards for Federal Fiscal Year 2025 (i.e., Academic Year 2025-26 and Summer 2026 FLAS fellowships) and that it did not request funding for the program in its FY2026 Budget Request. In its letter, the Department stated it had judged “that the purpose of and functions of the international and foreign language education grant programs are not a priority of the Administration” and “are inconsistent with Administration priorities and do not advance American interests or values.”
